Conical Pommel
|
The conical pommel is a simple yet elegant design. Conical pommels are on many antiques and were available through the manufacturer Souzy Paris in France. Souzy Paris' conical pommel listed in their catalogue (see photo above) was the inspiration for Benjamin Arms to produce a spectrum of pommels. We thought a spectrum of pommel weights a great idea because they would allow us to better tune the balance of our weapons. Through these pommels we’ve been able to achieve the ideal handing our weapons are known for. Benjamin Arms' conical pommels come in eight weights and are machine lathed by the former production manager of Yakima Racks. He jokes they're so accurate to their specifications that he calls them "medical instruments". If buying a pommel for a weapon not balanced by Benjamin Arms, consider that the 115 and 125 gram weights were designed for épées (though they have balanced many foils) and all those lower for foils. If your blade is heavy or long, you'll want the pommels higher on the spectrum; a lighter blade would need a pommel lighter on the spectrum.
Faceted Urn pommels are available on many of our foil and épée designs, and can come standard on any customized weapon. --- All Benjamin Arms pommels measure 5/8 inch at the base where it meets the grip and are threaded 6x1 mm to a depth of 3/4 inches. Please be aware that additional filing, grinding or removing may be required to the tang these pommels are to be mounted on. Blade manufacturers tend to chop off tangs leaving them frayed. Total tang length may also need to be altered depending on grip length. |
