Steel Martingale

These steel martingales were produced by Souzy Paris in France (see above catalogue photo) and were mounted on sabres, épées and some foils. They sit between the weapon’s grip and pad and follow along the belly of the grip. At various finger intervals the steel curves out to fit comfortably between the fingers. The three sizes, one, two and three fingers, designates which finger the loop rests behind: ‘one finger’ the index finger; ‘two finger’ the middle finger; ‘three finger’ the ring finger. On foils or épées, steel martingales greatly assist in maintaining control of the weapon during flying point coupés, expulsions and presses while still allowing the use of the dexterous French grip. Adding one to a sabre offers increased control during cuts, engagements, and hanging guards.
